Under the auspices of Dr. Reda Hegazy, Minister of Education and Technical Education, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education represented by the "Science Development Office", in cooperation with the Project to Support Schools of Excellence in Science and Technology funded by the US Agency for International Development (STESSA), held a workshop to evaluate and present a report on the implementation of Scientific and technological activities for middle school students, during the period from 18 to 19 December 2022.
In the presence of Dr. Akram Hassan, Head of the Central Administration for Curriculum Development, Dr. Aziza Ragab Khalifa, Director General of Science Development, and science mentors in educational directorates nationwide.
This workshop comes as a second step after the training of public mentors in early September, and 360 trainers were trained at the level of the Republic, who trained nearly 20,000 science teachers in the preparatory stage at the level of the Republic, and an extension of the implementation of these projects that started since 2017 A specific department from each directorate (27 departments).
The workshop aims to generalize the application of scientific and technological activities for students in the first year of middle school as a scientific activity, and for students in the second year of middle school as an optional activity at the level of the Republic.
Dr. Akram Hassan, Head of the Central Administration for Curriculum Development, emphasized the importance of raising the efficiency of teaching science and focusing on the role that scientific activities play in achieving this, especially activities that focus on providing students with scientific research skills and the ability to solve problems, and emphasizing students’ practice of science processes, whether basic. or complementarity.
He pointed out that the goal of the activity is not only the final product of this activity, but rather the most important steps that this activity takes to achieve its goal, stressing the importance of supporting and developing science teachers at the level of the Republic in order to help build a scientific and methodological mentality for students at the level of all educational stages.
He also directed that activities can be used as a means to motivate students and a tool to attract them to schools, stressing the importance of encouraging creativity and innovation in order to be able to face the major problems and challenges facing us.
During the workshop, Dr. Aziza Ragab Khalifa, Director General of Science Development, presented an overview of the idea behind these activities, their aim and the extent to which these activities are integrated with the objectives of teaching science. Elementary school and the development of evaluation methods for the secondary stage, as well as considering that the preparatory education stage is the one that qualifies to enter schools for outstanding students in science and technology.
The project coordinator, Adel Al-Hafnawi, presented the interim steps of the project from planning to implementation, and also presented the various stages of training since 2017 until now, and each directorate represented in the general directive presented a brief presentation showing the implementation of activities in the schools of the directorate in all its departments, in addition to presenting challenges and stories success during application.
At the end of the workshop, how to work towards developing this project was presented, and a number of proposals and recommendations were presented.
