Dr. Tarek Shawky, Minister of Education and Technical Education, attended an important meeting at UNESCO headquarters in the French capital, Paris, entitled: “The time is now: Addressing the emergency global situation in education and the problem of basic skills.” UNICEF organized this meeting in the context of the great preparatory conference organized by its sister organization, UNESCO To prepare for the World Summit on Education Transformation, which is scheduled to be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York next September.
And participated in this meeting: the Egyptian ambassador to France, Mr. Alaa Youssef, and a delegation from the Egyptian embassy, as well as the International Director of Education at the World Bank, the Director of Education at UNESCO, the Executive Director of UNICEF and the International Director of Education at UNICEF. Major international organizations specialized in education affairs and a number of Ministers of Education participated. from around the world.
UNICEF asked Dr. Tarek Shawky, the Egyptian Minister, to give the opening speech of the session as well as the closing speech as an expression of the international community's appreciation of the Egyptian experience in developing basic education, in particular building the curricula of the new system (EDU 2.0).
Dr. Tarek Shawky reviewed the features of the development of education in the Arab Republic of Egypt and called on member states to cooperate in order to address the problems caused by the Corona pandemic and the lack of millions of children with basic skills of reading and arithmetic.
The participating delegations expressed their appreciation for Egypt's leading role in UNESCO and Egypt's international role in developing the education system before, during and after the Corona pandemic, provided that the new Egyptian system is on the international agenda of the World Conference on Education Transformation in New York next September.
